ELEKTRA WOMEN’S CHOIR
Morna Edmundson and Diane Loomer, co-conductors
Elektra Women’s Choir was founded by Morna Edmundson and Diane Loomer, C.M. in 1987 and is regarded as a leader in the classical women’s choir movement worldwide. Its mandate is to inspire and lead in the choral art form through excellence in performance and the creation, exploration, and celebration of women’s repertoire.
Elektra is known for its adventurous programming, seeking out music written specifically for women and frequently commissioning new works. Elektra was honoured to represent Canada at the Fourth World Symposium on Choral Music in Sydney, Australia (August 1996). In addition to presenting concerts in the Vancouver area, Elektra is proud of its many outreach programs for young singers and emerging composers and conductors.
Elektra performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra twice in 2008: in February as the off stage chorus in Holst’s The Planets, and on stage as part of Cool Britannia in May. The choir released its eighth CD, Sacred Places, in October 2006.
Elektra is honoured to work with an outstanding accompanist, Stephen Smith.
