Rosa Cheng – Principal Performer, Vancouver Cantonese Opera Artistic Director
Ms. Cheng is well recognised for her talents as well as the versatility and diversity of her styles in singing and acting. Her career as a Cantonese opera artist started in 1993. Under the guidance of Mr. Zi Ming Tse and his wife Wai Ha Kung, she has mastered the intricate techniques and skills in Cantonese opera singing. Since then, she has performed in the principal female role in over 50 Cantonese opera repertoires. Her passion in the preservation and promotion of Cantonese Opera to the highest standard in Canada has led her to the founding of the Vancouver Cantonese Opera Company in the year 2000. Its non-profit making objectives have enabled Cantonese Opera to be accessible to a wider audience at a lower cost, with the hope to cultivate a wider appreciation of the unique and vibrant aesthetic of Cantonese Opera. As the Artistic Director of VCO, her role includes planning and organising each of the long/short play productions. This also include in the designing, refining of scripts, casting, training of up to 25 performers, and coordinating with a company of live musicians playing traditional instruments. In addition, each performance is accompanied by English subtitles to enhance the experience of a non-Cantonese speaking audience.
