Bio
Alexandra Smither, soprano
In May of 2017 Alexandra Smither swept the Eckhardt-Grammatté National Music Competition, taking home both First Place and Best Performance of the Commissioned Work, Nicole Lizee’s Malfunctionlieder. Her prize included a nationwide tour of Canada in fall of 2017 in which she performed a recital of contemporary works featuring Canadian composers. She has held fellowships at Songfest, Carnegie Hall, the Banff Centre, and Music Academy of the West. She was a 2017 Tanglewood Music Festival Fellow where she made her Seji Ozawa Hall debut alongside Emanuel Ax for a performance of Schubert’s “Der Hirt auf dem Felsen”. Comfortable in early music, she has sung with acclaimed ensembles Ars Lyrica and Emmanuel Music. Smith is a graduate of the University of Toronto and the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. She is the co-founder of Rice University’s contemporary ensemble Hear&Now, as well as a member of the Houston based new music ensemble Loop38.
